Give and Take

The passage of time can be a little mind-boggling sometimes. When we began RetroKitten back in 2000, we had no idea we'd still be going strong in 2008. Maybe that doesn't sound terribly optimistic to you, but you have to understand this industry. People, Companies and Names come and go.

We were running Windows Servers back in those days, and most of our time was spent just keeping them running. AJAX and Web 2.0 didn't exist and the world hadn't yet faced 9/11 yet. The U.S. Economy was one of the strongest in the world and the future looked bright, or maybe we were just young and optimistic still.

Almost a decade has passed and the world has changed, and we have changed right along with it. Somehow, the neo-conservatives slipped over the wall in the night. In short order, they started two wars, destroyed our economy, devalued the education of our children and tried to convince us that they were the majority.

The moral majority (which is neither) began trying to legislate their religion down our throats with endless assaults on our civil liberties. When their attempts foundered, they revved up their PR Machine to try to convince us. 2257 is all about protecting children. Iraq was involved in 9/11. Our President talks to Jesus. There is a War on Christmas.

Seriously.

The nice thing about human culture is that whenever an extreme point of view tries to push itself on the majority, society as a whole tends to push back.

You have to admit, even with the backward steps we've taken, as a whole things are still better off then they were. Imagine a culture as rich and diverse as the alternative modeling scene existing back in 1950. Sure, there WAS a scene but it was mostly underground.

We hadn't yet put "In God We Trust" on our bank notes (that happened in 1957) so that was good but we were still backward in a lot of ways. Women still weren't entirely trusted with the vote, and letting them make decisions about their own bodies was out of the question.

Here in the dawn of the 21st century, I find myself vaguely optimistic again. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I think the groundwork has been laid. We just can't rest of our laurels. That's how they snuck in the first time. We can't let this happen again.

We owe it to our children to create a better world then the one we were forced into.
